The DYSIIS team (for Dynamics of Infectious agents in Insular Systems; team leader : Pablo Tortosa) hosts full and associate Professors from Reunion University, Clinicians (University Hospital Center), an IRD associate researcher, a CNRS research director, post-doc fellows, Masters and PhD students, and visitors. The research carried out by DySIIs mainly focuses on the dynamics of infectious agents in endemic/introduced animal reservoirs, and that of their invertebrate vectors (e.g. mosquitoes, fleas and ticks) through the islands of South West Indian Ocean (e.g La Réunion, Mayotte, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles). Research programs aim at tackling the mechanisms of maintenance of pathogens in animal natural populations, analyzing multi-partner interactions involving animal reservoirs, pathogens and their vectors (including associated microbiota), addressing the exposure of human populations to zoonotic pathogens and eventually identifying drivers of emergence.

Thus far, the research projects conducted by the DYSIIS team have allowed (i) to decipher the diversity, infection patterns and mechanisms of host-specificity of bacterial (Leptospira) and viral (Influenza, Paramyxovirus) zoonotic pathogens towards their host (rodents, bats, seabirds), (ii) to reveal the presence of pathogenic taxa (Bartonella, Rickettsia) in the bacterioma of ectoparasite arthropods, (iii) to mobilize hospital cohorts to study the associated pathophysiological consequences of infection with Chikungunya, and (iv) to set up tools allowing to explore the molecular and cellular bases of vectorial competence of vector mosquitoes for a set of arboviruses of regional importance (Chikungunya, Dengue, Zika) including the role of mosquitoes associated microbiota.

The creation of the SymbioTIC start-up company located at CYROI capitalizes the expertise of DySIIs in the use of the sterilizing Wolbachia bacteria for the control of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus).

The collaborations currently being set up involve research units in mainland France [ ECOMIC in Lyon (Claire Valiente Moro and Audrey Dubost), MIVEGEC in Montpellier (Frédéric Simard and Karen McCoy) and UVE in Marseille (Xavier de Lamballerie)]; in Indian ocean bassin [Mayotte ARS delegation (Patrick Rabarison, Mu'uminat Cheick-Ahmed), Vahatra Association of Madagascar (Steve Goodman), CNDRS (Yahaya Ibrahim, Rhabamata Ali-Boina) and PNLP (Yssouf Amina, Rahamatou Silai) of the Comoros, the Ministry of Health of Seychelles (Léon Biscornet, Simon Julienne, Jimmy Mélanie), the University of Pretoria (Wanda Markotter)], in South America [LABINFO in Rio de Janeiro (Ana-Teresa de Vasconcelo) and ICC Virology laboratory in Curitiba (Claudia Nunes Duarte Dos Santos)].

The majority of our research work is supported by FEDER Region Réunion, EU H2020 (ZIKAlliance program), AIEA, ANR (France), BioST (structure fédérative de recherche, Reunion University), France-Brazil partnership program CAPES-COFECUB (Campus France),.
